lonely

I was given a rush job the other day, that had to be done in about two hours from the time I received the initial e-mail. Since the artist was The Lonely Island, I simply could not turn the work down, no matter how much stuff was already on my plate. I did three shirt designs, one of which is posted above. It just got submitted, so it may not be approved - but I like it!

One of my best buds introduced me to The Lonely Island boys in early 2005. I was amazed to see a group of dudes with an appreciation for awkward, odd and uncomfortable humor — the type of humor that most people cannot understand why anyone would think it to be funny. I think they’re hilarious. My faves include the intro to Awesometown and Bing Bong Bros. Andy has joined the cast of SNL, and the team has since gifted the world with ”Dick In A Box” and “Jizz In My Pants,” among many others. While most of what the guys have done since Andy joined SNL is brilliant, you should also enjoy taking a look back at all the nonsense they’ve created prior to becoming worldwide pop sensations.

Yeah yeah, it’s been a while. I’ve been busy — really really busy. The amount of work I have had the past few months has been a enormous blessing, and a bit of a curse. But I prefer to focus on the blessing, at least in this situation.

2008 was my best year ever, and all signs point to 2009 being even better. I have a venture or two I’d like to set in motion this year, as well as a few other goals. One of which being a new site. This blog and my portfolio were only intended to be temporary, and, with the help of my buddy Joshua Mauldin, I will have a new site that combines the blog and portfolio. I’m hoping to get that live sooner rather than later, but the priority is doing it right, so that I can keep it around for a while.

As far as work goes, I hope to post new work on the work site soon. Recently, I’ve been working on art for Funeral For A Friend, Fleetwood Mac, Newton Faulkner, Disney, He Is Legend, Third Eye Blind, Jack’s Mannequin, Motley Crue, Deftones, Linkin Park, The Beatles, Shinedown, Taking Back Sunday, Muse, Nirvana, Buckcherry, Breaking Benjamin, Escape The Fate, August Burns Red, Atreyu, Scott Weiland, Skillet, Apocalyptica, Metallica, Mudvayne, Led Zeppelin, Haste The Day, Taste Of Chaos Tour, Famous Stars & Straps, and Reach Records — and believe me when I tell you that most of that has just been the past few weeks.

I’m really excited about a lot of the work that’s been coming out of Dark Collar, and hope to find a spare hour to get some of this new stuff posted soon. Thank you all so much for coming back and checking things out. Please leave comments, so I know you’re out there — your comments will only be more motivation to post more often.

I apologize for my lack of updates. I am, however, a small step closer to a real blog/portfolio site. I’ve learned a few things after launching my current blog and separate portfolio. One of which being that I have to have a CMS is that is going to run lightning fast, so that I don’t get discouraged while attempting to post a blog entry. With this current blog, it runs a bit slow, which I’m assuming you’ve noticed. Anyway, the new year should bring a new darkcollar.com along with it. Stay tuned.

This is a good time - for all Americans. While I am not interested in any form of political discussion, I feel I have to express a bit of what I’ve been feeling. Whether you are ready to admit it or not, our country got a little bit better Tuesday night. Big or small, a feeling of hope, in every American’s heart, permeated an entire planet. We have now taken a real step into this new millennium.

This is a new America - a better America, and I’m so glad to be here.

Depending upon whether or not you want to believe the majority of Oliver Stone’s latest film W., you may walk out of the theatre with a different opinion of our current Commander In Chief. Josh Brolin does a great job emulating many of the Bushisms that we’ve grown accustomed to over the past eight years. Richard Dreyfuss, however, cracked into a more diabolical representation of his character. This movie explains a great deal of our frustrations with our current government. That is, if you want to believe the film.

I did this backdrop for Matisyahu about this time last year. The photo doesn’t do it justice, but there are rays coming up behind a Jerusalem skyline. A company applied UV over the type, as well as details of the skyline, allowing it to react quite beautifully with a blacklight. I’ve just finished working on another backdrop for a band that plan to use a similar method, to create what I think will be one of the coolest backdrops y’all have ever seen. Stay tuned…

A few times in my life, everything I love seems to converge in divine fashion. This time, it was friends, design, and authentic mexican food. One of my best friends asked me to design the branding for his family’s authentic mexican restaurant. If I could, I would link you to one of their chicken tacos. In addition to loving the logo, it looks like some lucky designer is getting free tacos for life tacos gratis para vida!!

Posted on: September 30th, 2008 Smashing Threads

A friend of mine recently asked me to do a logo for Smashing Threads, his sister’s line of handmade bags and accessories. Twenty-five minutes later, I gave him this little diddy. I realized that my new favorite type of work is when someone asks me to write out the name of the company with a marker, and then send it to them as a logo. Brilliant!. Anyway, go check out her stuff.

If I could, I would inform everyone about Jamie Randolph. A friend of mine asked me to design a shirt for Jamie, and, sooner or later, I got hooked on his tunes. His CD was in my car for about 8 months straight, and I never got sick of it. You need to know about Jamie Randolph. And you need to get his tunes.
